The University of Cambridge was born in 1209, when Oxford scholars fled their city after three of their own were hanged in a dispute with local authorities. It trained a small sliver of society — just 1 to 5 percent ever became literate — but it introduced a quietly radical idea: that teaching could be its own dedicated act, separate from daily life.
The University of Oxford has no founding date — teaching is documented there as early as 1096, and the institution slowly took shape over the following centuries. Its growth accelerated after 1167, when Henry II recalled English students from Paris and scholars flooded into the small crossroads town. Oxford became a university by accumulation, not decree.
