Returning home

In the hero’s journey, the hero leaves the relative peace of home to confront calamity out in the world. Only once they have slain the dragon (literally or metaphorically) can they return peace to the kingdom.

In contrast, the antihero begins their journey already out in the world. They’ve perhaps spent years in pursuit of the dragon, trying to save the world, or on whatever quest they believed would bring them greatness.

But eventually, exhausted and jaded, they decide to return home. Rather than attempting to resolve the chaos in the world, they set out to resolve the turmoil within themselves—the storms that have always raged inside them, often originating in their childhood home. They put down their arms, seeking to build a true foundation of peace.

For the hero, the foundation of their journey is vanquishing an existential threat; only through that confrontation can they enact lasting peace.

For the antihero, the script is flipped. The foundation of their journey is cultivating lasting peace within themselves. This is not an act of turning their back on a world in need. It’s an act of turning toward and confronting themselves. Only through this inner confrontation can they finally cultivate peace—and only from that deep well can they make their highest contribution to the world.
