Antiheroes claim their peace not just as an act of self-care, but as a deeply liberatory and revolutionary act. Their peace is not only a precondition for their change work; it itself becomes the change they offer the world.
Many purpose-driven people fear that choosing peace will make them passive, as if constant stress is the price of caring. But peace isn’t a retreat from the world. Burnout is. Peace is what lets us show up and stay.
A pond is calm until a storm rolls through. An ocean stays still in its depths even beneath towering waves. Antiheroes aren’t after a fragile, conditional calm, but a resilient equanimity that can look the polycrisis in the face.
For the antihero, the foundation of their journey is cultivating lasting peace within themselves. This is not an act of turning their back on a world in need. It’s an act of turning toward and confronting themselves.
The antihero begins in the extraordinary world, striving for greatness, exhausted and lost. But one day, they hear the call to peace, beckoning them to put down their weapons, to put down their ambitions, to put down their need to go it alone and save the world, so they can finally restore that aliveness they lost long ago.
An antihero is someone — anyone — who challenges the constant societal pressure to achieve something extraordinary, be great, or save the world.
In mythical worlds, one person — perhaps with a trusted ally or two — can and must slay the dragon and restore the kingdom. In a single decisive act, the world is saved. This is the heroic view of social change.
The polycrisis framing creates an almost mythic obstacle in our path, just as terrifying and seemingly insurmountable as Sauron in Lord of the Rings, the Emperor in Star Wars, or the machines in The Matrix.
The hero’s journey, it turns out, is not as universal as we imagine. It is a Western, individualist story dressed up as one. It is, in its own way, another example of Western whitewashing of a rich, diverse tapestry of human storytelling.
