The year 2020 has seen millions of acres of California land ravaged due to unstoppable wildfires. To protect the state from further damage in the future, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced an executive order to reserve 30 percent of state land for conservation by 2030.
The project is the fruit of a strategic partnership between the Jane Goodall Institute and reforestation non-profit One Tree Planted and will focus on restoring habitat for endangered chimpanzees by adding 3 million trees to the Albertine Rift Forests.
Organizations across the U.S. have joined together in support of nature-based solutions. The World Economic Forum and American Forests have launched the U.S. chapter of 1t.org, an initiative to “conserve, restore, and grow” one trillion trees around the globe.

In the 1940s, 75% of Costa Rica was cloaked in lush rainforests. It is thought that between up to a half of that forest cover in Costa Rica had been destroyed by loggers by 1987. Today almost 60% of the land is once again forest.
