Suriname becomes first country in the Amazon region to eliminate malaria
And four more of humanity’s good news for climate, justice, peace, and more from the week of June 30 – July 6 2025.

Suriname becomes first country in the Amazon region to eliminate malaria
Suriname has officially been certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization (WHO). This certification marks the successful interruption of indigenous malaria transmission for at least three consecutive years – a major step forward in the global fight against one of humanity’s deadliest diseases. With today’s announcement, WHO has now certified 46 countries and one territory malaria-free – and each one has successfully prevented the re-establishment of the disease.
New Zealand approves use of ‘magic mushrooms’ to treat depression
Found in over 180 species of fungi these mushrooms have a long history of use in Indigenous spiritual and healing rituals in parts of Central and South America. Studies have found that 80% of patients who were given psilocybin experienced a drop in anxiety and depression that lasted for six months or more. David Seymour, New Zealand’s associate minister of health, said the new policy is a “real breakthrough.”
Wisconsin Supreme Court strikes down state’s 1849 near-total abortion ban
In a 4-3 decision, the court’s liberal majority affirmed a lower court ruling that overturned the 176-year-old ban and left in place a more recent law in Wisconsin allowing most abortions until about the 20th week of pregnancy. As was the case in many states with similar older laws, or newer so-called trigger laws, the ban came back into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade in 2022. In short order, the decision prompted Planned Parenthood’s Wisconsin operations to suspend abortion services in the state.
Hawaii becomes first U.S. state to charge tourist ‘Green Fee’ to fund climate resilience
Act 96 will raise the state's current transient accommodations tax by 0.75% for a total of 11% placed upon the nightly lodging rate, effective Jan. 1, 2026. The fee will apply to travelers staying in hotels, short-term vacation rentals, and for the first time ever, cruise ships. Tourist taxes are quickly emerging worldwide as more destinations face the impacts of over-tourism and climate change. Last year, Greece, Bali, and the Galápagos Islands all implemented or raised their fees on travelers to contribute to sustainability programs.
Germany to raise minimum wage from €12.82 to €14.60 by 2027
The wage increase will take place in two stages. First, it will be increased from €12.82 per hour to €13.90 at the beginning of 2026. It will then increase again by €0.70 a year later. This means German workers would typically earn close to €2,500, making it the second-highest minimum wage in the European Union after Luxembourg, which mandates a monthly minimum of €2,638.
World Health Organization launches unprecedented Global Malaria Eradication Programme (1955 C.E.)
The historic program successfully eliminated the disease in North America, Europe, the former Soviet Union, Taiwan, much of the Caribbean, the Balkans, parts of northern Africa, the northern region of Australia, and a large swath of the South Pacific, and dramatically reduced mortality in Sri Lanka and India.
Humanity eradicates malaria (2054 C.E. ???)
Malaria has been one of the biggest scourges on humanity for millennia and mostly kills babies and infants. However, through the widespread dissemination of a vaccine developed in the 2020s and other mechanisms, global efforts to eradicate perhaps the deadliest disease known to humanity finally find resounding success. In the 20th century alone, malaria claimed between 150 million and 300 million lives, accounting for 2-5% of all deaths globally. By the halfway point of the 21st century, these deaths had been effectively eliminated.
Restore the Snake River
From EarthJustice: The future of the Columbia and Snake Rivers, their salmon, and communities in the region are now coping with a devastating setback after President Trump pulled out of the historic Resilient Columbia Basin Agreement that had set us on the path to restoring the Columbia Basin, including planning for breaching four dams on the Lower Snake River.
