India holds its first general election with full universal franchise
India’s first general election began on a October morning in 1951, when voters in Himachal Pradesh cast the earliest ballots in a four-month, 68-phase vote. More than 173 million people were registered, many unable to read, so each candidate received a differently colored ballot box. It remains one of the boldest democratic experiments ever attempted.
