The Sasanian Empire began in 224 C.E., when Ardashir I defeated the last Parthian king at Hormozdgan and claimed the ancient title of King of Kings. From his capital at Ctesiphon, the dynasty ruled for over four centuries, weaving Persian art, Zoroastrian faith, and Greek and Indian learning into a legacy that outlived the empire itself.
