Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus premieres in Athens after his death
Oedipus at Colonus reached the Athenian stage in 401 B.C.E., staged by Sophocles’ grandson after the playwright’s death at around 90. Written in his final years, it follows the blind, exiled king to a sacred grove, where he finds a strange grace. Only seven of Sophocles’ 120-plus plays survive — this one among them.
